Hayes named new manager of Rocky Mountain Hydro

Oglethorpe Power Corporation has named Richard C. (Rick) Hayes Jr. as plant manager at the Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant in the Armuchee community in Floyd County. Hayes replaces long-time Plant Manager Bill Tharpe, who has retired.

Hayes has worked at the Rocky Mountain plant since 1993 and has served as craft supervisor, project manager and maintenance manager. Prior to joining Oglethorpe Power, he held positions with American Hydro Corporation, Susquehanna Electric Company and Allis Chalmers Hydro/Voith Hydro.

Hayes holds a degree in electrical power technology from the Williamson Frees School of Mechanical Trades in Media, Pennsylvania.

“We are extremely pleased to have someone with Rick’s skill, training and experience to oversee the operation of one of the most important generating facilities in Oglethorpe Power’s power-producing fleet,” said James Messersmith, senior vice president, plant operations.

Hayes said he is excited to be taking on this new position.

“Rocky Mountain is an outstanding plant with dedicated workers who are committed to achieving excellence in the operation of this critical generating facility,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to work in Floyd County, where we work so closely with and get so much support from the local community.”
