Kenneth Sutton, owner of Simple Clean Lines LLC, answers the questions for today’s Small Business Snapshot.
What is the primary purpose of your business? To create quality, handcrafted furniture pieces for the home.
What is the business background of the owners? I have been a metal fabricator for 30-plus years.
Why did you start this particular business? Back in 2011, I purchased a weekend home and had to furnish and I was extremely disappointed at the price of poor quality, mass-produced furniture. I saw it as cheap junk with a lot super hyped marketing behind it. My items are simple in design and quality.
What makes your business unique? A large portion of my items are created from upcycled steel. Some of my utilitarian items, such as the toilet paper and paper towel holders, are made from old horseshoes. Some of my side tables and plant stands are created from upcycled steel from shipping containers.
What do you enjoy most about your chosen profession? I love coming with unique furniture pieces using salvaged material, and the one-off custom items from my imagination.
What has been the biggest or most interesting challenge to overcome as a small business owner? Marketing and sales.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? I like the fact that when people buy one of my one-off items, I feel a sense of satisfaction and connection that they viewed it in the same way I did as I was creating the item. I feel that a large part of my items have a human touch to them, sort of like mama’s homemade biscuit versus frozen.
