Beth Dunay, architect and owner of E. Dunay Design, answers the questions for today’s Small Business Snapshot.
What is the primary purpose of your business? My primary purpose at E Dunay Design is to offer custom designs to everyone, whether it is a new building, addition or just a small remodel. A building project is a major investment. I strive to make it a positive experience by providing you expert assistance as we balance your needs, wants, budget, time and quality. I partner with clients from the planning stage throughout the process to construction’s completion.
What is the business background of the owner? After graduating from the architecture program at Auburn University, I spent several years working in other cities before returning to Rome. Having worked in the architectural field for over twenty years, I have broad experience in a wide variety of building types and sizes.
Why did you start this particular business? I have always loved designing and creating things. We have all fallen under the spell of spaces that inspire, awe, or have comforting warmth. My greatest satisfaction is helping people take their inspirational spaces from a spark of an idea to a joyful physical form.
What makes your business unique? Owning a small business allows me to provide clients my full, personalized attention. I am your sole contact during the project and will always be available to you.
What do you enjoy most about your chosen profession? I enjoy the design process and helping my clients solve their problems. It is very rewarding and fun to look at the different options that can fit an owner’s needs. Equally, it’s also rewarding to see their vision become a physical reality during construction.
What has been the biggest or most interesting challenge to overcome as a small business owner? The biggest challenge for new business owners seems to be learning how to run a business. I try to spend some time every day learning more about how to run and grow a business. The different aspects like marketing, finance and accounting have challenged me with new ideas.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers? An architect does more than just help you design a building and produce plans. We help you evaluate sites or existing buildings as well. I can also give you more options in the planning phase and help refine your needs and requirements into spaces that you’ll enjoy being in. Building is a process. Always allow more time than you think you’ll need for each phase: design, bidding and construction. For more information on the design process see my website at edunaydesign.com.
