Michael Hendrix, LMT, NMT, owner of Riverside Orthopaedic Massage Center, answers the questions for today’s Small Business Snapshot.

What is the primary purpose of your business? My purpose is to not only provide my Northwest Georgia neighbors with the tension and stress relief that they need, I specialize in zeroing in on specific muscular needs of individuals. Whether a person has an issue with carpal tunnel, TMJ disorder, low back pain or any number of chronic symptoms, my work is effective. I work hand in hand with physical therapists and chiropractors to complement the treatment that they provide.

How long have you operated here? While my practice has been open only a few months in Rome, I recently relocated from the Atlanta area where I have been in practice for over 17 years. My work has been recognized seven times for “Best Prenatal Massage,” “Best Overall Massage,” “Best Therapeutic Massage,” “Best Deep Tissue Massage,” and I was a recipient of the Creative Loafing “Best Massage Therapist of the Year” honor.

What is your business background? I graduated in 2000 from the nationally acclaimed Atlanta School of Massage. For six years, I served as the school’s director of admissions and a student clinic supervisor, as I built a private practice. I developed close relationships with physical therapists, chiropractors and dentists to determine how my work could effectively benefit their patients. I entered the field of massage therapy after leaving the corporate world. I have a degree in marketing and public relations from Mercer University. I honor specific members of the community at my practice by offering permanent discounts to active members of the military, veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters, students and teachers. My practice is family oriented ... often offering services to members of an entire household. I love what I do. Massage therapy never feels like work to me, as I have an extreme passion for bodywork.

Why did you start this particular business? It was important to me to bring the anatomical knowledge that I possess, along with the decades of experience I have, to the area where my family resides. Being closer to family has become more and more important to me as I get older, and I have a real appreciation for the people of north Georgia. Massage is not just a luxury, it is a necessity. It is my goal to be both helpful and affordable.

What makes your business unique? There are very few massage therapists that offer the type of deep tissue and neuromuscular massage that I offer. Even fewer massage therapists stay in the field as long as I have been practicing. I have worked with some of the toughest conditions, and seen it all when it comes to muscular disorder. I genuinely enjoy the challenge of starting work with a new client, and seeing them regularly to make a difference in their condition.

What do you enjoy most about your chosen profession? Massage therapy is one of the few forms of healthcare where an immediate difference can be seen in a patient. I can literally point out an instant change in a client’s muscles when I release an area. It's AMAZING! I am a self-described muscle geek. I genuinely love the miracle that is human anatomy, and consider it an honor to be trusted by my clients.

What has been the biggest challenge to overcome as a small business owner? I am most challenged by my empathetic nature, but use it as a positive. I understand and feel the pain of my clients. I seek to make a real difference in how they manage chronic pain. I develop ongoing therapeutic relationships with the people that enter my office. They are like family to me.
