Longtime Rome automobile dealer John Welborn, 80, died early Thursday morning in an Atlanta hospital from complications of a stroke suffered over the weekend.

Welborn moved to Rome in the mid 1970s to take over the Chevrolet dealership which was located at what is now the corner of Turner McCall Boulevard and Riverside Parkway. He later added Toyota, Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Hyundai in Rome and a Ford dealership in Cedartown to the family group of dealerships.
