The owner of SMC Music is looking to open a store catering specifically to guitars as well as move his current music store over to Central Plaza.

Shane West, the owner of SMC Music at 122 Hicks Drive, is planning to open a shop dedicated to guitars and stringed instruments.

He’s hoping to have Broad Street Guitars open at 338 Broad Street, next to Jefferson’s, perhaps as early as February.

“It will be a string shop, guitars and accessories and things like that,” West said. “They will be step up instruments so they won’t be the begin-ner level. We’ll have the Martin guitars which can range from $500 to thousands of dollars.”

They will have several other lines of guitars and a few other instru-ments as well.

SMC Music, which he and his wife Misty West have owned since 2006, will stay open but they’re planning to move the store from Hicks Drive to Central Plaza on Second Avenue. He is not sure of a date for that move, saying the final lease for approximately 4,000 square feet of space right next to Cycle Therapy is still being drawn up.

The building at 338 Broad Street was a little small to move the entire store, he said, so the guitar shop idea grew out of his plans to move the entire SMC Music shop.

The Central Plaza location will give him considerably more space for the shop which is a little cramped in its current location on Hicks Drive, he said.

“The space is going to be built out for us so we’ll be able to spread out our inventory a little more,” West said.
