ROME, Ga--Spelling bees are as much about spellers' steely nerves as their knowledge of words, and Tyler Van Riper displayed both this morning.
The seventh-grader at Rome Middle School won the city schools’ annual bee by correctly spelling “magnetic” and “neon,” earning a savings bond and a spot in the district bee to be held Feb. 26.
“I just felt relieved that it was over,” Tyler said after her victory. “And my stomach went back into place instead of being up in my throat.”
Tyler beat out 8 spelling champs from each of the system’s elementary schools, many of whom it was the pressure not the words that got the better of them.
