DALTON — Five Dalton residents died in a two-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning in Texas.

Driver Trinidad Guerrero-Cardenas, 49; along with passengers Jorge Nunez, 50; Clara Arroyo, 16; Victoria Castillo, 64; and Paula Avila-Lopez, 67, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Corpus Christi-Texas Department of Public Safety. Four other passengers were transported to Northshore Hospital in Portland, Texas, with non-life threatening injuries.

The group was traveling in a caravan to Mexico for the holidays and left at about 4 a.m. on Monday, according to a family member. The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, two miles from Sinton, which is north of Corpus Christi.

According to a preliminary investigation, “a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban pull-ing a small, 6-foot box utility trailer was traveling south on U.S. 77 (occupied by the driver and eight passengers). For unknown reasons the driver went off the roadway to the left at the top of the overpass over BUSI 77, and struck BUSI 77 head-on under the overpass and burst into flames.”

Troopers are continuing the investigation.
