The Atlanta-Fulton County Library System has announced its two Buckhead libraries will temporarily close later this month for renovation as part of Phase II of the system’s library renovation project.
The Buckhead Library, located at 269 Buckhead Ave. NE, and the Northside Library, located at 3295 Northside Pkwy. NW, will close for renovations June 20 and 21, respectively, both at 6 p.m., according to a news release. They were originally expected to close in May, but the project has been delayed.
Patrons are reminded to transfer hold items, locate a nearby library to return library materials and search for library programs at http://afpls.org/locations or use the system’s library locator tool to search for an alternate library.
The design/build team of Evergreen Construction and McAfee3 Architects has contracted with the system to provide design, engineering and construction management services for the Buckhead and Northside library projects, and Heery/Russell is the program management team.
“The closing of the Buckhead and Northside Libraries is part of a two-year effort to redesign and modernize 23 of the county’s 34 libraries. Upgrades will include items like new HVAC systems, roofing, upgraded technology, improved layouts, new shelving, study rooms, (Americans with Disabilities Act)-accessible restrooms and more,” Gabriel Morley, the system’s director, said in a news release. “While we know the closing of this library will bring some inconvenience, the result will be well worth it. We look forward to completing the renovations as quickly as possible and reopening beautiful renovated libraries that can serve the community more efficiently.”
New construction is expected to take six to nine months. During construction library service will be available at the following nearby locations:
♦ Peachtree Library, 1315 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta
♦ Ponce De Leon Library, 980 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE, Atlanta
♦ Northwest Library at Scott’s Crossing, 2489 Perry Blvd., Atlanta
Also, the system announced the Sandy Springs Library and the Kirkwood Library will reopen after renovation this summer and will soon be available as alternate locations for the two Buckhead-area libraries. The Sandy Springs Library closed in August and was supposed to reopen in March but that project was also delayed.
