Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver announced the arrest of Ciji N. White, 33, of Cedar Bluff on charges of felony chemical endangerment involving a death.
The death occurred in November of 2016, and investigators have been waiting on autopsy results for nearly one year before proceeding. The deceased was stillborn at a Chattanooga hospital and was positive for methamphetamines.
According to Sheriff Shaver, the case was presented to a grand jury earlier this month by Chief Investigator Josh Summerford and as a result, the grand jury indicted the suspect.
“We have made multiple arrests for chemical endangerment involving children, but I believe this is the first case in this judicial circuit that someone has been charged with chemical endangerment involving a death," Shaver said in a press release. "The is a very tragic incident and we hope that people take notice that it is unacceptable to use illegal drugs during a pregnancy.”
Sheriff’s Office investigators took White into custody on Monday and she was transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.
