A total of eight wrestlers from LaFayette and Ridgeland will represent Walker County at the Class AAAA State Traditional tournament in Macon this coming weekend.

The Ramblers had six wrestlers qualify for state during the West Sectional at Pickens High School.

Sam Lemons was the lone sectional champion for LaFayette as he equaled his 132-pound individual title from the Area 7-AAAA last weekend.

Caleb Mariakis (113) and Barron Taylor (220) each finished as sectional runner-up. Britton Gilbert (138) was third, Joe Clayton (152) was sixth, and Will Mefford (195) placed eighth to punch his ticket to Macon.

Ridgeland will send two grapplers to Macon as Cody Brooks (126) and Mark McKevitt (170) each placed seventh in their respective weight classes.

As expected, Area 7-AAAA flexed their muscles at the sectional tournament. State Duals champion Gilmer will be one of the favorites for the State Traditional title after qualifying 12 wrestlers for Macon. The Bobcats had two sectional champions in Cameron Perry (126) and Johnie Flakes (138), while the other 10 finished in the top four.

Southeast Whitfield will take five to state, led by 220-pound champion Carlos Fraire, while Heritage’s 113-pound sectional champion Isaiah Knight will lead a contingent of five Generals’ wrestlers at state.

A total of 29 of the 56 semifinalists at sectionals came from 7-AAAA, including all four spots at 113 pounds.

The tournament begins on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex, continues all day on Friday, and concludes with the championship opening ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship finals at 3 p.m.
