The LaFayette Ramblers saw five of their six wrestlers claim first-round victories on the first night of the Class AAAA state tournament at the Macon Centreplex on Thursday.
Caleb Mariakis (113 pounds), Sam Lemons (132), Britton Gilbert (138), Joe Clayton (152), and Barron Taylor (220) all advanced to the championship quarterfinals, while Will Mefford (195) fell to the consolation brackets.
LaFayette finished the night in fifth place overall with 19 points. Gilmer, who went 12 for 12 in the opening round, is in first place with 38 points, followed by Carrollton (29.5), Alexander (26), and Locust Grove (20).
Both state qualifiers from Ridgeland also lost their first matches on Thursday. Cody Brooks (126) lost 7-6 in a match that wasn't decided until the final seconds, while Mark McKevitt (170) was pinned in his opening-round bout.
Gordon Lee will also be in action in the Class A tournament on Friday. Wrestling in the eight-man brackets begin at 1 p.m., and the Trojans will have a wrestler in 13 of the 14 weight classes.
The semfinals in all classes will start at appproximately 7 p.m. on Friday. The championship finals will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
