The Class AAAA state wrestling tournament has completed its quarterfinal round in Macon and several athletes from the Northwest Georgia area still have state title dreams intact.
Heritage has sent three wrestlers through tonight’s semifinals. Isaiah Knight (113 pounds) will take on Jalal Malik of Jonesboro in his semifinal match. Tyler Hill (120) will do battle with Cody Starnes of Alexander, and Michael Moore (182) will take on Monroe Area’s John Callihan.
Austin Frye (126) and Jacob Stephens (138) are still alive in the consolation brackets.
LaFayette will have two semifinalists in Caleb Mariakis (113) and Britton Gilbert (138). Mariakis will face Lumpkin County’s Greg Hilliard in the semis, while Gilbert will take on Kenya O’Neal of Hephzibah.
Sam Lemons (132), Joe Clayton (152), Will Mefford (195), and Barron Taylor (220) are in the consolation brackets still fighting for third place.
Both Cedartown wrestlers have moved on to the semifinals. Jonas Ritter (160) will square off with Jamal Mitchell of Shaw in a semifinal match tonight, while defending state champion Jordan Watkins (195) will draw Tyler Smith of South Effingham.
In the Class AAAAA tournament, also being held in Macon, Rome's Elijah Kerr-Brown (160) is the only Wolves' wrestler to advance to the semifinals. Kerr-Brown will face Billy Meek of Pope in the semifinals tonight.
Triston Payne (132) and Ariu Ofum (220) both lost in the quarterfinals, but are still alive with a chance to earn third place. Joey Fricks (145) and Sean Classon (195) both lost on Thursday, and were eliminated with consolation bracket losses Friday morning.
