The Rockmart High School tennis teams have been busy this week.

After being rained out on Monday, the Rockmart tennis teams returned to the court on Tuesday to face Douglass in a pair of Region 4-AAA matches.

Neither Rockmart teams had any trouble with Douglass, with both teams winning 5-0.

Morgan Thompson started things for the Lady Jackets at No. 1 singles by beating Brittni Turnispeed 6-0, 6-0. Kristin Stone won at No. 2 singles over Tytiana Pendleton of the Lady Astros, 6-0, 6-0. Savannah Hudson kept the momentum going at No. 3 singles, beating Junia Pepiner 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, the Rockmart team of Rae Darden and Kaitlin Burns downed Renea Young and Tarica Wilborn, 6-0, 6-0. Rockmart won by forfeit at No. 2 doubles.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, blew past the Astros as well.

Mason Barnette won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3 while Matt Giudice won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Rockmart’s Tristan Adams picked up a big win at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles action, Tyler Baulding-Woods and Steven Dean won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0 and Jacob Summerville and Jordan Williams won by forfeit at No. 2 doubles.

“It was a great day for us,” Yellow Jackets head coach Wayne Brooks said.

On Wednesday, the Yellow Jackets knocked off Central-Carroll 4-1 in region play.

“We cleared a giant hurdle by beating Central,” Brooks said. “The wind was horrific, and it felt like the icy dead of winter out there for the spectators.”

Giudice won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0.

“Matt played beautifull to keep his unbeaten streak alive,” Brooks said.

At No. 2 singles, Barnette remained undefeated as well, winning 6-1, 6-2.

“He battled the wind, but managed to keep the ball deep in the court and just run his opponent around with accurate ground strokes,” Brooks said.

Jonathan Badon won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

“Jonathan is normally one of our doubles specialists, but he stepped up and won at singles,” Brooks said. “His volleying skills were amazing as he was able to put his volleys on a dime. It was his first varsity win in a singles match.”

Jared Brumbelow and Dean won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-1.

“It was textbook doubles play,” Brooks said.

Rockmart’s lone loss came at No. 2 doubles when Baulding-Woods and Adams lost 6-4, 6-4.

“This is our only loss of the season so far,” Brooks said. “Tyler and Tristan never really hit their stride, though they had times when they looked amazing. The windy conditions were very frustrating.”

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in region play.

“I’m very proud of my boys,” Brooks said. “They just keep looking amazing as the talent keeps getting better and better.”

The Lady Jackets, meanwhile, lost to Central-Carroll 5-0.

Thompson fell at No. 1 singles to Sydney Stone 6-0, 6-1. Stone lost to Emily Startup at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2 and Hudson stumbled to Denney Meigs at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.

“I am very proud of Kristin for playing so smart with the wind,” Lady Jackets head coach Malin Evans said. “She fought so hard and gave everything she had.”

At No. 1 doubles, Darden and Burns lost to Emily Bush and Lauren Bush 7-6, 6-4. Jennifer Badon and Ashmi Jariwala lost to Central-Carroll’s Mary Kate Sailors and Elizabeth Minick 6-0, 6-3.

“Our doubles teams played hard and gave their very best,” Evans said.

Rockmart is scheduled to play Haralson County on Thursday in another pair of Region 4-AAA matches.
