Both the LaFayette Ramblers and Lady Ramblers tennis teams were pushed to the wire on Wednesday, but both squads came through with 3-2 home wins over Northwest Whitfield to close out a solid first half of the season.
The Ramblers fell into a 2-0 hole after losing both doubles matches. Northwest's Thomas Blackwell and Chris Brown won in straight sets over Daniel Witt and Chaz Richardson, 6-3, 6-3, while Blake Frankenberger and Cody Bouff claimed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Noah Holland and Chaed Clements.
But LaFayette would get its first points as Jamie Huskey beat Jacob Fredrickson at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-4, and A.J. Lowrance would tie the match after a 6-0, 6-4 win over Troy Poe at No. 2 singles. That set up Clayton Underwood, who clinched the win at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Lane Watson to send the Ramblers to a 6-2 record.
There was more final match drama on the girls' side.
LaFayette opened with two quick wins as Madeline Ensley picked up an easy 6-1, 6-0 victory over Emma Jones at No. 1 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Tori Hunter and Abbey Hannah took down Sydney and Alli Wagner, 6-2, 6-2, to put the Lady Ramblers one point from victory.
But the Lady Bruins would answer as the team of Valerie White and Halley Henderson scored a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Brieanna Maggard and Evie Watters at No. 2 doubles, and Northwest tied the match at No. 3 singles as Sara Richards beat Saucey Dalton, 6-1, 6-2.
But Jessica McDaniels would save the day for the Lady Ramblers, outlasting Gracie Cansler, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles to win the match. LaFayette is now 7-1 heading into Spring Break.
LaFayette will host Ridgeland on April 2 before a non-region match at Model on April 4.
