The No. 11-seeded Trion Bulldogs went on the road Friday and pulled the upset over No. 6 Hawkinsville in the opening round of the Class A public school state playoffs.
The Bulldogs handed the Red Devils (17-7) a 6-2 loss in the first game of the doubleheader, then completed the sweep with a 2-1 victory.
Trion got good news after the game when it learned that No. 14 Jenkins County stunned No. 3 Schley County, 18-3 and 3-2, in their opening round series.
The Bulldogs (16-10), now the higher seed, will host Jenkins County in the state quarterfinals on May 8.
Trion's sweep added to a big day for teams from Region 6.
Gordon Lee swept Irwin County in their first-round series, while Darlington, Mt. Paran, and King's Ridge all won their first-round series in the private school division playoffs. Mt. Pisgah split its first two games.
