The Sonoraville volleyball team opened Area 6-AAA play with big wins over Ringgold (25-16, 25-21) and Murray County (25-14, 25-21) at the Sonoraville Recreation Center Tuesday evening.

The Phoenix (5-6, 2-0) were paced by Emalie Hicks with 14 aces and five kills, Haley Ponder with 16 kills and five aces, Savannah Wilbanks with 26 assists, 10 aces and five kills and Maris Irick with seven kills.

“Our girls had a fairly solid evening of play,” said Sonoraville coach Trace Vaughn. “We were a little slow out of the gate against Ringgold, but once we got rolling, we put the hammer down pretty hard. We are working on our confidence level and believing in ourselves. We definitely have the talent to compete at the top of the Area again this season, but the girls have to believe it.”

The Phoenix play at Southeast Whitfield against Gilmer and the Lady Raiders on Thursday.
