It was a banner season for basketball in Calhoun and Gordon County with three teams winning region championships and four teams advancing to the state tournament.
On Monday during a banquet at the Krannert Center at Berry College in Rome, several of the local teams, players and coaches were honored by the Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club for their success this season.
One of the biggest honors of the night went to Calhoun’s Taylor Palmer, who was named the girls co-MVP along with Gordon Lee’s Kassidy Blevins.
The boys’ co-MVP’s were Cartersville’s Ryan Davis and Excel’s Rudy Winters.
Also garnering big honors were Calhoun girls coach Jerry Pruett and Sonoraville girls coach Stephanie Caudell who were named Coaches of the Year along with Excel boys coach Jon-Michael Nickerson and Cartersville boys coach Mike Tobin.

The Sonoraville and Calhoun girls teams were also named Teams of the Year, as well as being Teams of the Month for December.
Earning team honors for the Calhoun girls were Taylor Palmer (Player of the Year), Bree Walraven (Player of the Month, December) and Carly Curtis (Player of the Month, January).
For the Calhoun boys, Greyson Arnold was the team’s Player of the Year. Kaelan Riley (Player of the Month, December) and Collin Parker (Player of the Month, January) were also honored.
The Sonoraville girls were led by Carrie Cheeks, who was named the team’s Player of the Year. Player of the Month winners were Jennilee Gentry (December) and Payton Smith (January).
For the Sonoraville boys, Jackson Murray was the team’s Player of the Year. Chris Baker (December) and Alex Cheeks (January) were the Players of the Month.
The Gordon Central girls team Player of the Year was Tiffany Lincoln. Diana Hernandez (December) and Maci Mills (January) were the Players of the Month.
For the Gordon Central boys, Bryan Brookshire (December) and Chandler Curtis (January) were the Players of the Month.
