The Rockmart High School wrestling team took six wrestlers to Macon to compete in the Class AAA state traditional wrestling tournament. And now one will compete for a state crown.
Dennis Wolfe, the 138-pound Class AAA west sectional champion, will square off with Oconee County's Jake Hodges on Saturday in the state championship match. Wolfe will enter the contest with a 33-4 record and Hodges will come in at 65-0.
Wolfe made it to the state title match by pinning Jackson's Zak Evans in the opening round and then earning a 4-0 decision win over Morgan County's Quentavious Jackson.
Rockmart's Nick Forsyth, 126 pounds, won by pinfall over Dodge County's Will Morgan in the opening round at state, but lost to Banks County's Mason Patton by major decision, 13-2.
Forsyth will tangle with Woodward Academy's David Morgan on Saturday. If he wins, he advances to the third-place match. If Forsyth loses, he will compete in the fifth-place match.
Jason Wolfe, 120 pounds, picked up an 8-1 decision win over Jackson's JT Wood in the first round. But lost to Ringgold's Sam Shepard, by decision, 5-4, in round two.
Wolfe will now wrestle Morgan County's Jacob McAlister Saturday for the chance to wrestle in the third-place match. If Wolfe loses to McAlister, he will wrestle in the fifth place match.
Marlon Morales, 160 pounds, defeated White County's Wil Stonecypher by decision, 15-7 to start the state tournament. In the second round, Morales lost to Banks County's Wes Faulkner by decision, 3-2.
Morales will face East Hall's Corey Reece Saturday. If Morales wins, he will wrestle in the third-place match. If he loses, he will compete in the fifth-place match.
Zack Kirby, 170 pounds, entered the state tournament having just won the Class AAA west sectional championship. However, Kirby lost to Swainsboro's Dalvin Lott in the opening round by a 5-4 decision. Kirby then fell to Cartersville's Gerry Vassel by a decision of 6-1 in the loser's bracket.
Brett Arnold, 106 pounds, also represented Rockmart at state. Arnold lost to Buford's Darius Bunch by pinfall in the opening round before North Murray's Alex Gambino pinned him in the loser's bracket.
