The two tennis coaches at Rockmart High School both agree on one thing – preseason practices are going about as well as possible.

“We are doing great,” Yellow Jackets head coach Wayne Brooks said. “Our practices are going great when it isn’t raining.”

Lady Jackets head coach Malin Evans also had positive things to say about the early practices.

“Practice is going well,” Evans said. “Hopefully the weather will work in our favor and it will be even more enjoyable.”

The Rockmart tennis teams will continue their preseason practices until they get the regular season under way on Tuesday, Feb. 12 when they host Pepperell in the season openers.

Rockmart will have 12 tennis matches this season before competing in the Region 4-AAA tournament in mid April. Out of the 12 matches, seven will be at home.

The Yellow Jackets enter this season with plenty of motivation, knowing they were only one match away from qualifying for the state tournament last year. Add the offseason motivation of barely missing the state playoffs with the fact that they Yellow Jackets only lost two players off last season’s team, and Rockmart should be a team to watch in Region 4-AAA this year.

Members of the Yellow Jackets squad this year are seniors Matt Guidice and Jonathon Badon; juniors Tristan Adams, Mason Barnette, Tyler Baulding-Woods, Tyler Black, Jared Brumbelow and Wes Worley; sophomores Steven Dean and Jordan Williams, and freshmen Dustin Adams and Jacob Summerville.

The Lady Jackets, meanwhile, enter 2013 with less players, but that doesn’t worry Evans.

“We have a smaller group of girls this year, but a lot of them are returning with a great amount of experience,” Evans said. “And the new girls have a lot of athletic ability.”

Evans was quick to point out the positives of having only 10 players this year.

“With a smaller number of girls, as a coach it means I will have more time to work with each of them,” Evans said. “So I am very excited to be able to improve our girls team skills this year.”

Members of the Lady Jackets team this season are Jennifer Badon, Kaitlyn Burns, Megan Crawford, Rae Darden, Katelyn Evans, Shelby Garrett, Savannah Hudson, Ashmi Jariwala, Kristin Stone, and Morgan Thompson.
