The Rockmart High School Lady Jackets tennis team earned another big Region 4-AAA win on Thursday as they took down Haralson County 4-1.
“I am so excited for the girls for pulling it out,” Lady Jackets head coach Malin Evans said. “I believe we have a great team of boys and girls at Rockmart High School.”
At No. 1 singles, Morgan Thompson defeated Haralson County’s Caroline Calhoun, 6-0, 6-1.
“Morgan showed how mentally strong she is,” Evans said. “I am proud of her.”
Kristin Stone was victorious at No. 2 singles, downing Skye Overby 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (11-9).
“Kristin pulled herself together and hung in there until she pulled it out in the third set,” Evans said. “That was strong, excellent play.”
Rockmart’s Savannah Hudson won at No. 3 singles, downing Sierra Toponce, 6-4, 6-4.
“Savannah also had a very tough, strong opponent but she hung in there and played very calm and smart,” Evans noted.
At No. 1 doubles, Rae Darden and Kaitlin Burns defeated Haralson County’s Dani Shadix and Julia Hardin, 6-0, 6-1.
“Rae and Kaitlin showed what a clever tennis game they have,” Evans said.
At No. 2 doubles, Rockmart’s Jennifer Badon and Katlayn Gentry defeated Jordan Hitchcock and Summer Slay, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8).
“It was Katlayn’s first match and she showed an extraordinary strength and way of reading the game,” Evans said. “She almost almost helped us win all our matches. She is a great asset to the team. I am looking forward to Katlayn playing many more tennis matches.”
Rockmart plays against Cedartown today at 4:30 p.m.
