A very successful season for the Rockmart High School Lady Jackets tennis team has come to an end.
Playing against the Savannah Arts Academy in round one of the Class AAA state playoffs, the Lady Jackets were swept 5-0. Rockmart had entered the state playoffs as the No. 4 seed from Region 4-AAA. Savannah Arts Academy was the top seed from Region 1-AAA.
"Our girls stepped up their games and showed they could hang with these very skilled girls," Lady Jackets head coach Malin Evans said. "It was a joy to see the girls fight to the end. They never stopped hustling for any points even when they were down."
The Lady Jackets No. 1 singles player Morgan Thompson fell to McKenzie Collins 6-2, 6-0. Kristin Stone lost at No. 2 singles to Cailin Colbert 6-1, 6-1 and Savannah Hudson fell at No. 3 singles to ia Colbert 6-0, 6-1.
Rockmart's No. 1 doubles team of Rae Darden and Kaitlin Burns lost to Asha Colbert and Emily Daugherty 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Katlayn Gentry and Jennifer Badon lost to Elizabeth Stober and Calire Curtsinger 6-0, 6-1.
"Unfortunately this ended our girls tennis season," Evans said. "But the team made great progress this year. They have came so far. The positive and encouraging atmosphere that the girls have shown each other anthe other team when playing has resulted in several positive comments from other team parents and players. Ithas been a fun season, and it seems that the girls have grown to love this fun game and will continue to play even after high school."
