Two weeks into the 2013 season and new Ridgeland softball coach Richie Wood has noticed both positives and negatives with his initial crop of Lady Panthers.
"We've already talked at length about playing from the start (of games) instead of playing catch-up," he said. "When we play from the start, we're a very good team. We're also making some mental mistakes that have cost us some games, but I really like how this team just refuses to lose. Every game this season, they've battled right to the end."
Ridgeland continued to swing some hot bats at the LFO Invitational at the Jack Mattox Complex in Ringgold, finishing the two-day event with a 3-2 record.
Coahulla Creek 5, Ridgeland 4
The tournament started on a down note for the Lady Panthers, who fell to the Lady Colts in nine innings on a cool Friday afternoon.
Chyanne Revis had two hits and scored two runs in the loss. Shelby Epperson was 3 for 4, and Tori Townson collected three hits and drew two walks.
Ridgeland 3, Marist 2
Already with a win under their belts over Class AAAAA No. 2 Pope earlier this season, Ridgeland scored two times in the fifth to beat Class AAAA No. 10 Marist on Friday night.
Epperson had three bunt singles, scored twice, and drove in one run. Haley Johnson went 2 for 3 to help Jessica Sizemore collect the win in the circle.
Harris County 6, Ridgeland 3
On Saturday, the Lady Panthers could not overcome Harris County's five-run second inning and slipped a game under .500 on the season.
Ally Johnson picked up three hits and scored one of Ridgeland's runs, while Townson and Haley Johnson scored the other two.
Ridgeland 15, Gordon Central 0
Up 1-0 after two innings, the Lady Panthers sent 20 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored 14 times to make quick work of the Lady Warriors. Amy Hill scored three runs while five other Lady Panthers scored two runs each.
Freshman Allison Wallin threw a three-inning perfect game, striking five batters including the side in order in the second inning.
Ridgeland 12, Christian Heritage 2
In Saturday's finale, the Lady Panthers spotted the Lady Lions two first-inning runs, then scored a dozen unanswered to move to 5-4 overall on the season.
Revis and Sizemore each had three hits, while Ally Johnson was 2 for 3. Wallin picked up the win in relief of Sizemore, who started the game. Wallin fanned five in four innings of work.
Ridgeland is schedule to play a non-region game at LFO at 5 p.m. Monday before heading to Allatoona High School for a tournament this weekend.
Ridgeland will take on defending Class A private school state champion Mount Pisgah Christian and Kennesaw Mountain on Friday night. They are slated to face Grayson, Cherokee, and Calhoun on Saturday.
