A redirected goal by Drew Kelly with just over three minutes remaining earned the homestanding LaFayette Rambler boys' soccer team a 2-2 tie with Heritage on Friday afternoon.

The game did not count in the Region 7-AAAA standings.

After a scoreless first 40 minutes, the Generals (1-2-1) got on the board in the 45th minute as Drew Sherrill beat Rambler keeper Trevor Logan for the opening tally of the match.

But six minutes later, LaFayette (0-2-1) would answer with their first goal of the season. Dylan Queen would win a free ball before passing to Chase Horne, who split the Generals' defense on a give-and-go back to Queen. His shot beat Heritage keeper Cutter Thompson to knot the match at one goal each.

Heritage regained the lead in the 62nd minute as Carter Beekman caught Logan off his line and chipped it into the back of the net. They nearly added to their lead two minutes later, but Rambler fullback Britton Gilbert made a fantastic defensive play, heading a Heritage shot out of play just before the ball could cross the goal line.

LaFayette's equalizer came in the 77th minute. A corner kick from Mark Bennett sailed through the Heritage box and found the foot of Horne, who fired from close range as Thompson moved to make the save. However, Kelly was able to get a toe on the rebound and pushed the ball to the back of the net to pull LaFayette even.

The Generals would get two final chances in the waning seconds of stoppage time, but a shot by Beekman went wide, and Heritage failed to convert on a final corner kick as Logan came up big with one final save.

Both LaFayette teams will be back in action on Thursday, March 14 when they travel to Southeast Whitfield.
