The Gordon Lee Trojans were not able to make it three titles in a row in the Bluegrass State, but still managed a very respectable third-place finish at the Woodford County (Ky.) Invitational over the weekend.

The Navy-and-White had six wrestlers place and collected 177 points. They finished 5.5 points behind Jefferson City (Mo.) and Woodford County (Ky.) Black, who tied for the championship with 182.5 points.

Jonathan Ragsdale ran his season record to 37-0 after winning the 113-pound class with two pins and two major decisions, while Will Jacks improved to 35-1 by winning the 152-pound division.

Shane Farmer was forced to settle for second at 195 pounds. Dallas Goodlet lost his first match on Friday at 220 pounds, but won six straight bouts in the consolation bracket to take third place. His last five wins came by pinfall.

Stihl Lance (126) and Sydney Rhinehart (160) each advanced to the championship semifinals. Rhinehart eventually finished fourth, while Lance was fifth.

A total of 31 teams representing five states made up the field.

Up next for the Men of Troy will be the Area 3-A Duals at Trion High School next Saturday. The top two teams at the area meet will join the top two teams from the other three Class A areas for the State Duals Jan. 10-11 at the Macon Coliseum.

Mariakis wins Rockmart title for Ridgeland

Junior Caleb Mariakis added a Rockmart Invitational title to his resume on Saturday as he claimed the 126-pound title. Mariakis beat Ringgold’s Sam Shepard, 8-6, avenging a semifinal loss to Shepard in last weekend’s McCallie Invitational.

Mariakis was the only Panther wrestle to place at Rockmart. Patrick Alford went 3-2 at 106 pounds, but finished one win short of the medal rounds.

Ridgeland will travel to Gilmer High School for the Area 7-AAAA Duals, which begin Friday afternoon.

The top two teams at the area meet will join the top two teams from the other seven Class AAAA areas for the State Duals Jan. 9-11 at the Macon Coliseum.
