Gordon Lee Trojans

Both the Gordon Lee Trojans and Lady Trojans placed fifth in the team standings at the Area 4-A Public School meet at Athens Academy over the weekend.

The Gordon Lee boys won two events. Andrew Towns won a tiebreaker against teammate Corey Jewell to capture the pole vault title after both cleared 11-feet.

The other win was turned in by Dylan Smith, who won the 1600 in a time of 5:02.41. Teammate Garret McAllister was third (5:11.23) in the same event.

And in the shot put, Jewell punched a ticket to the state sectionals with a third-place showing in the shot put (41-9).

Randall Smith was fifth in the shot put (40-11 3/4). Knox Edwards was fifth in the 110 hurdles (19.92). Tanner Ellis was fifth in the high jump (5-4), while teammate Scott Royal was seventh (5-2).

Commerce won the boys' area title with 139 points, outdistancing Twiggs County (121), Georgia Military Prep (107), and Hancock Central (99). Gordon Lee (54) was fifth, while Mt. Zion (21), Elite Scholars Academy (14), Taliaferro County (13), Warren County (13), and Wilkinson County (1) rounded out the field.

On the girls' side, the Lady Trojans - as expected - had a big day in the field events, picking up wins in four events and getting a 1-2 sweep in three of them.

Katelyn Lee won the shot put (35-1 1/2) with teammate Shae Wooten (31-7) placing second. Lee also won the discus (117-4), while teammate and sister Madelyn Lee was second (91-2).

Kalei Kimbrell (5-0) won the high jump with Anna Pettigrew (4-11) placing second. Pettigrew also won the pole vault (7-0).

The 4x100 relay "A" team placed fifth overall (54.23), while Tiffany Holland finished sixth in the 400 (1:11.92). Juliana Spradlin was seventh in both the 100 hurdles (20.54) and the 300 hurdles (1:00.45).

Georgia Military amassed 124.20 points to win the team title. Commerce (95.20), Hancock Central (88.20), Mt. Zion (81.20), and Gordon Lee (74) filled the top five spots. Wilkinson County (49.20), Elite Scholars Academy (21), Twiggs County (18), Taliaferro County (18), and Warren County (12) completed the field.

Landmark Christian will host the Class A Sectionals on Saturday, April 27 with the top four in each event qualifying for the state championship meet.
