The Gordon Lee boys' tennis team gave a valiant effort on Tuesday, but had to settle for the area runner-up trophy as they lost to Trion, 3-2, in the Area 4-A public school finals.
Jonathan Chance and Isaac Thomas gave Trion a 1-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kalen Bradley and Brayden Born at No. 1 doubles, but Gordon Lee would tie up the match has Jonathan Bettis toppled Alec Jarauld at No. 2 singles by the same count.
Bobby Jones' 6-1, 6-4 win over Caleb O'Neal at No. 3 singles put the Bulldogs a point from victory, but Logan Davis and Chandler Steele had other ideas.
Gordon Lee's No. 2 doubles team rallied from a 6-2 loss in the opening set to take the second set 6-4, then they won the tiebreaking set, 10-8, to even the score.
However, the No. 1 singles match saw Trion's Callan Hamby win the first set, 6-1, before rallying from 4-1 and 5-4 down to beat Joseph Looney, 7-5, to clinch the area crown.
For Gordon Lee (5-10 overall), it marks their first appearance in the state tournament since 2010, and it is their best finish in an area or region tournament since 2002.
They will take on Jenkins County in the opening round of the Class A public school state tournament.
