FOOTBALL: Trion guts out a win over Gordon Lee

The Trion Bulldogs moved to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Region 6A-A standings with a hard-fought 17-8 victory at Gordon Lee on Friday night. 

Trion led 6-0 at halftime on a 34-yard Cory Bethune touchdown run with 7:04 left to play in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was no good.

Austin Weaver booted a 19-yard field goal at the 8:34 mark of the third quarter to add to the lead, and following a Gordon Lee fumble, Malik Martin crashed in from the 1-yard line. Bethune hit Chandler Lathem on the conversion to increase the lead to 17-0.

Gordon Lee avoided the shutout as Caleb O’Neal found Colin Wright on a 36-yard TD pass with 2:42 to play. Scott Royal hauled in the conversion pass.

Bethune ran eight times for 70 yards and completed 4-of-9 passes for 67 yards, but was picked off three times. Martin added 67 yards on 17 carries.

Wright paced the Trojan offense with 69 yards on two receptions. Zack Cobb returned to the lineup and collected two interceptions while Hunter Teeters picked up one.

Gordon Lee fell to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in subregion play.
