The Gordon Lee Trojans will host Irwin County on Friday in the first round of the Class A state public school baseball tournament.
A doubleheader will be played Friday, starting at 4 p.m. in Chickamauga. A third game, if needed, would be played on Saturday.
As expected, the Trojans (23-2) were forced to settle for the No. 5 seed in the 16-team field, despite finishing less than a tenth of a point behind Emanuel County Institute for the top spot in the final power ranking standings. Irwin County (14-11) is the tournament's No. 12 seed.
With region champions filling out the top spots in the tournament, ECI, Charlton County, Schley County, and Baconton Charter are the top four seeds. Gordon Lee, who lost to private school Mt. Paran Christian in the Region 6-A title game, dropped to fifth in the tournament as the highest-ranked non-region champion.
Should Gordon Lee win their first-round series, they would either play at No. 4 seed Baconton or they would host No. 13 seed Turner County in the state quarterfinals.
The other two first-round series on the Trojans' side of the bracket includes No. 1 ECI against No. 16 Lincoln County, and No. 8 Clinch County against No. 9 Treutlen.
Should the higher-seeded teams advance, Gordon Lee would have to travel for the final three rounds of the tournament.
For a time it looked as if the Navy-and-White would be hosting region rival Trion in the first round, but after the final brackets were released following Wednesday morning's appeals, the Bulldogs rose one spot to No. 11 and will travel to No. 6 Hawkinsville in round one.
The Trion-Hawkinsville winner will face either No. 3 Schley County or No. 14 Jenkins County. The other two first-round series in the bottom part of the draw include No. 10 Miller County at No. 7 Johnson County, and No. 15 Marion County at No. 2 Charlton County.
On the private school side, Darlington also drew a No. 5 seed and the Tigers will host No. 12 Hebron Christian in the opening round. The start time for the first game of the best-of-three series was not known as of press time. Hebron won the Class A state title in 2011.
The winner of the series will face either No. 4 First Presbyterian Day or another Region 6 member in No. 13 Christian Heritage.
The other two first-round series on that side of the bracket include No. 16 Landmark Christian at No. 1 Eagle's Landing Christian, and No. 9 Mt. Pisgah Christian at No. 8 Holy Innocents'.
The bottom half of the bracket will see No. 3 Mt. Paran Christian, the Region 6 champion, hosting No. 14 Aquinas, while No. 11 King's Ridge Christian will play at No. 6 Brookstone. Defending Class A champion Providence Christian, the No. 10 seed, will travel to No. 7 Savannah Christian Prep, while No. 15 Lakeview Academy will face off with No. 2 George Walton Academy.
A total of seven teams from Region 6 earned spots in the two state tournaments.
