Cedartown High School's Jordan Watkins will get a chance to repeat and exact some revenge Saturday in the Class AAAA 195-pound state championship match.
Watkins won the Class AAA 195-pound state title last season, and will now look to repeat as a state champion as a senior. But standing in his way will be the undefeated Keneth Brinson of Marist High School.
Brinson recently defeated Watkins by decision, 5-3, in the Class AAAA west sectionals 195-pound title match.
At state, Watkins defeated Eastside's Garrett Yates by pinfall in the opening round, and then picked up a 16-5 major decision win over Troup's Michael Mackfield in the quarterfinals. Watkins then won over South Effingham's Tyler Smitrh in the semifinals to qualify for the state championship match.
Watkins will enter the state title match with a 61-4 record, while Brinson will go in at 48-0.
Cedartown's Jonas Ritter will also be competing at the state tournament Saturday.
Ritter, 160 pounds, defeated Baldwin's Willie Milner by pinfall in the opening round of state. Ritter then defeated Locust Grove's Chaz Brown by decision, 7-5, before losing in the state semifinals to Shaw's Jamal Mitchell, by pinfall.
Ritter will now wrestle Cairo's Paul Coleman on Saturday. If Ritter wins he advances to the third-place match. If he loses, he will compete in the fifth-place match.
