Both Cedartown High School state qualifiers Jonas Ritter and Jordan Watkins made their team, school and community proud on Thursday.

Competing in the opening round of the Class AAAA state traditional wrestling tournament in Macon, both Ritter and Watkins picked up wins.

Ritter, wrestling in the 160-pound weight class, won his state tournament opener by pinning Baldwin High School’s Willie Milner.

Ritter is now scheduled to wrestle Locust Grove’s Chaz Brown, who earned a 6-5 decision win in the opening round. Brown comes in with a 52-6 record and Ritter 36-8.

Watkins, the defending Class AAA 195-pound state champion, opened the Class AAAA tournament by pinning Eastside’s Garrett Yates.

Watkins is now slated to take on Troup’s Michael Mackfield in round two. Watkins enters that match with a 59-4 record and Mackfield 34-12.

The state tournament is slated to continue Friday and Saturday at the Macon Centreplex.
