Two area sophomores led the way for girl’s track teams as 16 local athletes scored points at the Georgia High School Association State Meets in Albany this season.

Darlington’s Stephanie Ward and Calhoun’s Sydnie Parker each grabbed top finishes in a couple of events in Albany. The two sophomores highlight the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Track Team First Team along with the other state scorers.

Ward finished as state runner-up in the Class A Private School 800 meters.

She also finished third in the 1600, fourth in the long jump and ran the anchor leg on the Tigers’ 4x100 relay, which placed seventh at state, and the 4x400 relay, which finished fourth.

All told, the sophomore sensation scored 19 points individually for the Tigers and helped the relays add another nine points for Darlington.

Parker also showed an underclassman can perform strong with a state runner-up finish in the Class AA 400 meters. She also placed fifth in the 200 and eighth in the triple jump at state.

Gordon Central’s Kara Evans finished as state runner-up in the shot put, 800 and 200 in the Wheelchair Division for the Warriors, helping the team grab a second-place overall finish.

Several area athletes had strong field-event performances in Albany as well.

Calhoun’s Tamia Wade placed third in the Class AA high jump and also competed in the triple jump and the 4x100 relay for the Yellow Jackets at the state meet.

Sonoraville’s Gabby Romine finished her strong season with a third-place finish in the Class AAA pole vault for the Phoenix.

Freshman Jesse Burkhalter gave notice that she could be making waves for the next few years in the high jump by grabbing a fourth-place finish at the Class AA Meet for Pepperell.

Cedartown’s Arterial Boozer grabbed a fourth place finish in the Class 4A long jump for the Bulldogs.
