Despire rain falling at a steady pace, the Rockmart High School soccer teams got their seasons under way on Tuesday, Feb. 12.
Playing on the road against New Manchester both the Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets lost.
The Lady Jackets fell 3-0, while the Yellow Jackets lost 6-0.
“New Manchester is a 5A school, but we played a great game against them in the pouring rain,” Lady Jackets head coach Krista Crawford said. “I started off the game with only one sub because three players were in the basketball playoffs. We fought hard throught the game, but lost.”
Despite the setback, Crawford was proud of how hard her team played, especially when they were a player down.
“During the last 10 to 15 minutes of the game, we played 10 girls against their 11 due to the fact that two of my players were injured,” Crawford said.
The Yellow Jackets also put forth a strong effort.
“We lost 6-0, which obviously was tough, but it’s early and losing against a 5A school isn’t as bad as it seems,” Yellow Jackets head coach James Schroeder said.
Rockmart fell behind 5-0 at halftime, but played much better after the break.
“We only let up one goal in the second half, so I was happy with that,” Schroeder said.
The first-year head coach said playing against New Manchester helped his team.
“It gives us a clear picture of who we are and where we are as a team, and where we can go from here,” Schroeder said.
Members of the Yellow Jackets squad this season are Byron Parris, David Pizano, Diego Hernandez, Luis Hernandez, Jose Gutierrez, Marcos Lopaz, Galen Ambrose, Adrian Belman, Conner Teems, Enrique Cruz, Trace Forsyth, Dylan Brookshire, Mitch Bozydaj, Kevin De La Tore, Cash Hughes, Taylor Cash, Glavin Collier, David H.
