During the 2012 football season, the Rockmart High School Yellow Jackets proved to be one of the best teams in Region 4-AAA. So it comes as no surprise that when the all-region team was released, the Yellow Jackets had 12 players honored.
“This is a great honor,” Rockmart head coach Dan Duff said. “All the coaches in the region met together and voted on these kids and that says a lot about our kids.”
Rockmart had four players make the all-region first team. Senior standout Kwame Peek, a Class AAA All-State second team member, made the all-region team as a wide receiver.
Defensively, the Yellow Jackets had three players make the all-region first team. Linebacker Darius Pittman, defensive back Tay Twine and defensive back Trevor Williams all made the top team.
On the all-region second team, quarterback Julian Welch and offensive lineman Alfred Shepherd made the offensive squad. Defensively, defensive lineman Tritt Fennell and defensive back Markise Smith made the second team.
Running back Jermonte Thompson, a sophomore, along with senior defensive lineman Shannon Thompson, junior linebacker Demarcus Lenoir and junior defensive back McKenzie Burge all made the all-region honorable mention squad.
Senior Jonathan Badon made the all-academic team.
“This is a testament of the hard work that the kids put into the season,” Duff said. “To have that many make the team is a testament to the kids themselves and to the kind of season we had.”
This past season, Rockmart finished third in Region 4-AAA with a 5-5 record. The Yellow Jackets then traveled to Appling County and upset the higher seeded Pirates, 34-33. The Class AAA state playoff win was Rockmart’s first since 1988.
Rockmart then advanced into the second round of the state playoffs, before eventually losing to Carver-Columbus.
