Football teams from all over the state will descend on Darlington on Thursday and Friday for the 7-on-7 Passing Camp. The 7-on-7 format, which features lots of passing, allows teams to get lots of extra practice on offense and defenses during the off season.

Darlington has been putting the camp on for a few years and it has drawn the attention of some top teams.

“We are very excited about it. We feel like it’s getting a reputation as one of the best in the state,” Darlington football coach Tommy Atha says. “We’ve got a big lineup again. The cool thing is that have every classification in the state represented.”

The camp, which ends with a tournament during the final sessions Friday, has several large schools committed to participate.

Some of those schools include Walton, Mountain View, Alexander, South Gwinnett and Lambert.

Along with those schools several others are making return trips to the event including Calhoun, Carrollton, East Paulding, Rome, South Paulding, Model and Darlington.

“It’s interesting to see how the lineup changes from year to year,” Atha says. “We have a few teams that are going to miss it, but we’ve got some new names and some bigger schools. It’s going to be great competition.”

The camp has multiple sessions both days to help the teams work on get plenty of repetitions.

“We have five sessions. The first four sessions are teaching sessions. They are games where we don’t keep score,” Atha says. “It’s an opportunity to work on things you want your team to do. Things that you know you’re going to do in a real game. In the last session, we make it a true 7-on-7 competition.”
