The Cedartown Bulldogs opened their 2013 spring football practices in front of a pair of Southeastern Conference school coaches.

With coaches from South Carolina and Auburn in attendance, nearly 100 kids took to the field on the first day of practice for the Bulldogs.

“We have 87 kids out here,” head coach Scott Hendrix said between drills.

The Bulldogs will continue practices until Thursday, May 23 when Cedartown will hold its annual spring football game. The contest will be at 7 p.m. at Cedartown Memorial Stadium on Doc Ayers Field.

This spring, Hendrix and his staff have one specific goal.

“We want to identify some young kids who have taken steps from the junior varsity level to the varsity level and are ready to play on Friday nights,” Hendrix said. “That is our main thing, finding some younger kids who are ready for the high school level.”

Hendrix also noted that the Bulldogs want to build positive momentum as they head into summer workouts.

“We want to make sure we are headed on the right track and that everyone is progressing,” Hendrix said.

The veteran coach said one position they are looking at hard this spring is wide receiver.

“We want to try Israel Battle at wide receiver along with Caleb Ely,” Hendrix said. “And we hope to find some depth at those position as well.”
