The Rockmart High School Yellow Jackets (1-2)soccer team dropped their Region 4-AAA opener on Tuesday.
Playing against Jackson-Atlanta, the Yellow Jackets came up short in a 2-1 setback.
“It was a very hard fought game for the boys, and I am extremely proud of their effort,” head coach James Schroeder said.
Because of an injury, star defender Enrique Cruz missed the game. Several other key players missed the game as well, Schroeder noted, due to prior obligations with the school play. Because of that, Rockmart played Jackson-Atlanta with only 12 available players.
“What kills me about this game is that we were the better team,” Schroeder said. “Unfortunately, when you only have one sub against a team that is carrying over 20 kids, things aren’t going to work out so well. They had fresh legs at the end of the game and we didn’t.”
Rockmart led at halftime 1-0 thanks to a goal from Diego Hernandez.
“We had some kids really step it up,” Schroeder said. “We just couldn’t hold on.”
Jackson-Atlanta scored on a corner kick early in the second half to tie the game, and then took the lead for good with about 13 minutes left.
“We just didn’t have the numbers needed to finish the game,” Schroeder said. “We should get Cruz back soon, and obviously the kids that are participating in the play will be back soon, too and that will help.”
