The Calhoun boys soccer team completed in the top division of the Oconee 7 v. 7 Soccer Tournament recently and fared well.
The Jackets fished 1-2 against some very tough competition. They lost to Class 6-A Habersham Central and Class 5-A Clarke Central, but finished the day with a 5-1 victory over Strong Rock Christian School.
Leading the scoring for the Jackets for the day was Gabriel Garcia with three goals. Brandon Blaylock, Alex Hernandez, Alex Lopez and Luis Enriques recorded a goal of their own.
“I’m very proud of the guys,” said Calhoun coach Matt Rice. “They put their summer vacation aside to work on getting better. We had a good season last year, but the guys know that if we want to get back to the championship and win it we have to put in the work.
“We graduated eight seniors from last year’s team and we have some holes to fill. Today several of our younger guys made a case that they should be in those roles in the Spring.”
The Jackets had a stellar season this past spring, finishing 20-3 and making their first-ever appearance in the Class AA State Championship Game before falling to Westminster in a close game in Carrollton.
They also were Region 7-AA champions, finishing 15-1 in region play with their only loss coming to Murray County.
