The Rockmart High School Yellow Jackets were hoping to take the momentum they gained in the Region 4-AAA tournament and use it to make a magical Class AAA state playoff run.

Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the Johnson-Savannah Atom Smashers never let Rockmart gain any momentum during their first round game Wednesday. In fact, Johnson-Savannah forced Rockmart to turn the ball over on each of their first seven possessions, and the Atom Smashers built a 17-0 lead while cruising to an easy 73-36 win.

The defeat ends Rockmart's season at 11-18. The Yellow Jackets had went into the region tournament last week with an 8-16 record, but won three of four games to qualify for the state playoffs.

Against Johnson-Savannah (21-6), Rockmart was unable to match the Atom Smashers size and speed.

And it was evident from the jump ball which the Smashers controlled for Greg Mortimer’s streaking layup.

The game quickly took on the qualities of a playground affair. Dunks and threes were popular.

Getting back on defense, optional.

In the second quarter, Johnson-Savannah had four straight dunks including an ahead-of-the-field 360-degree throw down by LSU-bound Tim Quarterman.

Quarterman finished with 17 points against Rockmart, 13 in the first half. Saadiq Muhammad had 10 points and Rico Bonds nine.

Kwame Peek paced Rockmart with 11. Bryant Middlebrooks scored nine, Jaylen Smith six, and Tay Twine four.

JOHNSON (73)

Quarterman 17, Roberson 7, Mortimer 8, Lovett 4, Myers 5, Bonds 9, Muhammad 10, Morris 4, Holmes 6, Maxwell 3.
