Last week the Rockmart High School basketball teams started their stretch run of Region 4-AAA games. A stretch that features eight consecutive region contests.

Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets and the Lady Jackets, they were unable to start this important region run the way they would have liked.

“We are a young team that is learning how to play varsity basketball,” Yellow Jackets head coach Kyle Stephens said. “We are getting better every day. We just have a lot to learn as a team.”

On Tuesday, Jan. 14 both Rockmart teams scored the exact same amount of points in their games. However, neither point total was enough to knock off Douglass.

The Lady Jackets dropped the opener that night to the Lady Astros, 63-39. In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets fell to the Astros 57-39.

On Friday, the Rockmart teams fell victim to Chapel Hill. The Lady Jackets lost 53-14 and the Yellow Jackets were taken down, 63-37.

On Saturday, the Rockmart squads returned home to defend their turf against Callaway. However, neither Rockmart team was able to get their offense going and Callaway swept both games.

The Lady Cavaliers won 60-28 over the Lady Jackets while the Cavaliers knocked off the Yellow Jackets, 58-32.

“We are working each day to improve at every facet of the game,” Stephens said. “Our goal and approach is to get better each day and play hard each game. We want to be playing our best basketball down the stretch going into the region tourney.”

Several players have stood out so far to Stephens.

“We have a bunch of young guys that contribute including Jaylin Smith, Drake Benefield, Fred Liggons, Devon Philpot, Kolby Owens and senior T.J. Choat,” Stephens noted.

As of press time Monday, the Yellow Jackets sat two and a half games out of the fourth seed for the upcoming region tournament.

Callaway (12-2, 7-0) led the boys standings, followed by Douglass (12-4, 6-1) and the B.E.S.T Academy (6-11, 4-2).

Chapel Hill (7-11, 5-3) held down the fourth spot, with Central-Carroll (6-13, 3-5) and Rockmart (7-10, 2-5) next. Jackson-Atlanta (3-13, 2-5) was seventh and Haralson County (1-16, 0-8) was in last.

For the girls, Chapel Hill (14-4, 8-0) holds down the No. 1 seed and they are followed by Central-Carroll (19-2, 7-1), Callaway (9-5, 5-2) and Dougass (5-6, 4-3).

Jackson-Atlanta (7-10, 3-4) currently has the fifth seed with Haralson County (5-13, 2-6) and Coretta Scott King (3-12, 0-6) next. The Lady Jackets (1-15, 0-7) were in last as of press time.

On Friday, Rockmart hosts Haralson County. The Lady Jackets will play at 7 p.m. and the Yellow Jackets at 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Lady Jackets will play Coretta Scott King at 5 p.m. and the Yellow Jackets will face the B.E.S.T Academy at 6:30 p.m. at home.
