With Pepperell’s Tyler Smith crafting another gem, the Dade County hitters had trouble getting the ball out of the infield on Tuesday.
In fact, the Wolverines had problems even getting the ball out of the batter’s box.
Smith, the Pepperell senior, racked up 15 strikeouts while tossing a one-hitter and guiding the Dragons to a 5-1 victory in Region 7-AA action in Lindale.
It was the second 15-strikeout game of the season for Smith, who carried a perfect game into the seventh inning of Tuesday’s game before yielding a single that eventually led to an unearned run.
And while Smith’s bid for a perfect game fell short, his record remained perfect — as did Pepperell’s region record.
Smith improved to 4-0 on the season, and Dragons moved to 3-0 in 7-AA and 8-2 overall.
Zach Williams led the Pepperell offense, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Caleb Jackson also had a pair of hits, including a double.
Bradley Adams went 1-for-1 with a double and a sacrifice fly, and Smith also chipped in offensively by driving in one of the runs for the Dragons. Evan Ashley also had a base hit.
Pepperell will face another 7-AA contest on Thursday, when the Dragons travel to Murray County.
