The Cedartown High School baseball team will get the 2013 regular season under way today. Cedartown will play Chattooga at 5:30 p.m. in a non-region game.
After today’s season opener, the Bulldogs will host their Polk County rivals Rockmart on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in another non-region game to close out the opening week.
This season, the Bulldogs will be led by three seniors. They are Jimmy Hand (signed a letter of intent with Northeastern University), Blake Oxenreider (signed a letter of intent with Georgia Highlands College) and Cody Mesta, a multisport star who was a Rome News-Tribune honorable mention member last season.
Other members of the Bulldogs team this season are juniors Austin Bradshaw, Kim Carr, Brandon Cheatwood, Caleb Ely, Daylon Gates, Carson Hatch, Austin Huddleston, Hayden Hudson, Kory Lindsey, Mitch Morrow and Brett Prince.
Sophomores this year are Harrison Barnett, Aaron Carter, Logan Duke, Shikahri Murphy, Austin Pope, Logan Rush, Tyrone Scofield, Sam Shelley, Grant Tidwell, Ben Truett, and Justin Womack.
The freshmen on Cedartown's team are Jeb Hays, Brayden McCollum, Michael Rhodes, Zonterious Scofield, Drew Vance and Tucker Wells.
Shane Williams is returning for his second season as the Bulldogs head coach.
After the two games this week, Cedartown will hit the road for a trio of road games next week.
The Bulldogs will visit Armuchee on Monday, Feb. 25 for a non-region game, then visit Rockmart on Friday, March 1 for a rematch before traveling to Lithia Springs on Saturday, March 2 for a non-region slugfest.
This season the Bulldogs will be competing in Region 7-AAAA, sub-region ‘A’ against Cass, Pickens, Gilmer, and River Ridge.
In a unique twist to the schedule, Cedartown will play each team in their sub-region three times in a week.
After playing nine non-region games, the Bulldogs will play River Ridge three times during the week of March 18, play Pickens three times during the week of March 25, Gilmer three times during the week of April 1 and Cass three times during the week of April 15.
Sandwiched in those sub-region games will be non-region dates against Chattooga (April 12) and Coosa (April 13).
A region play-in series will be held April 22-27 to determine who represents region seven at the Class AAAA state playoffs.
During that play-in series, teams from sub-region ‘A’ will square off with teams from sub-region ‘B’.
The Class AAAA state playoffs will begin with first round action on May 3 and will conclude with a title series on May 27.
