Numbers are up in the basketball league at the Cedartown Recreation Department.

According to Joe Colquitt of the recreation department, the league has 85 total kids and nine teams this year. Last season they had only one team in the entire league.

“We are so proud and excited about our success,” Colquitt said. “We have one five-and-six-year-old team, one nine-and-10-year-old girls team, two seven-and-eight-year-old boys teams, three nine-and-10-year-old boys teams, and two 11-and-12-year-old boys teams.”

Colquitt was quick to mention that the increase number of basketball players is likely due to the success of other Cedartown Recreation Department sports throughout the 2013 season.

“I believe our success in football, cheerleading and softball has helped our numbers go up in basketball too,” Colquitt said. “Not to mention the players, parents and coaches of our one and only team last year that gave us the start we needed.”

Try-outs and first practices were held last week and Colquitt noted that the gym was packed full all night.

“Our games start quickly,” Colquitt said. “The first games begin this week at the Nathan Dean Gym at the Bert Wood Youth and Athletic Complex.”

Colquitt noted that during the regular season, the teams will play games within the recreation league as well as against teams from Rockmart and teams from the Cedartown First Baptist Church league.

“We are very glad that we can work together and are able to play with First Baptist Church to really help our Cedartown athletes prepare for the middle school and high school levels,” Colquitt said. “We are also so thankful that Rockmart was willing to schedule some games with us.”

Games will be played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays this season.
