Meggitt Inc. in Rockmart has won bidding for a large U.S. Air Force contract to provide aircraft fuel cells. The contract, awarded through the U.S. Air Force Material Command at Hill Air Force base in Utah, will pay the Polk County company $244,803.

Meggitt is based in the old Goodyear plant in Rockmart and is one of the largest employers in Polk County. Much of its business is with the various agencies within the U.S. Department of Defense.

Meggitt has designed and manufactures a variety of fuel bladders that can survive light firearms attacks, allowing military personnel to return to their bases safely. Others are designed to hold their own after a crash, preventing or reducing the likelihood of a serious fire.

Neither the Air Force nor Meggitt returned calls to the Rome News-Tribune for comments.
