Meggitt Inc. in Rockmart has won bidding for a large U.S. Air Force contract to provide aircraft fuel cells. The contract, awarded through the U.S. Air Force Material Command at Hill Air Force base in Utah, will pay the Polk County company $244,803.

Meggitt is based in the old Goodyear plant in Rockmart and is one of the largest employers in Polk County. Much of its business is with the various agencies within the U.S. Department of Defense.

Meggitt has designed and manufactures a variety of fuel bladders that can survive light firearms attacks, allowing military personnel to return to their bases safely. Others are designed to hold their own after a crash, preventing or reducing the likelihood of a serious fire.

Neither the Air Force nor Meggitt returned calls to the Rome News-Tribune for comments.

Georgia inmate says he was raped at Hays State Prison, sues prison officials

TRION, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia inmate is suing three prison officials after he says he was raped in December while in Hays State Prison in Trion. The Chattanooga Times Free Press (http://bit.ly/1M0XALn ) reports that Atlanta-based attorney McNeill Stokes filed an amended complaint in U.S. District Court on July 15, taking over the civil case that the inmate started himself in April. The inmate is suing Hays State Warden Scott Crickmar, Deputy Warden Alisa Hammock and a member of the medical department referred to only as "Dr. Hill."According to the lawsuit, prison administrators violated his constitutional right against cruel and unusual punishment by failing to protect him.A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections declined to comment to the newspaper, citing the case's pending status. The inmate has since been moved to another prison.___Information from: Chattanooga Times Free Press, http://www.timesfreepress.com
