Mr. Summerville

Mr. Cecil “Pops” Summerville, age 68, of Rockmart passed away Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017 in a Bremen health care center following a five month illness.

He was born in Rockmart on Jan. 26, 1949 a son of Chalmas Summerville and Frankie Weaver Summerville.

He had lived most of his life in the Haralson and Polk county area. He was a member of the Springdale Baptist Church and a former employee of Bruce Albea Construction. Cecil’s hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Mr. Summerville was preceded in death by his father; a brother, James Leon (Joe) Summerville and a sister, Lucy Jean Carter.

Survivors include his daughter, Cicely Summerville, Rockmart; mother, Frankie Crawford, Bremen; granddaughter, Ann Marie Summerville; brothers: Jimmy (Sarah) Summerville, Bremen, Doug (Lynn) Summerville, Rockmart and Wayne (Vera) Summerville, Cedartown; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Brown officiating.

The family received friends Saturday prior to the service hour at the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Gable

Mr. Hayward Gable, age 85, of Cedartown, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017.

Mr. Gable was born on July 17, 1932 in Haralson County, a son of the late Alan H. Gable and Inez Adkins Gable.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, two brothers and his wife, Jean Wiggins Gable.

Mr. Gable was retired from the construction industry. He was a veteran, proudly serving with the United States Air Force, and was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his loving family, his daughter, Kay Benton; four brothers, David Gable, Billy Gable, Roy Gable and Alvis Gable; two sisters, Verlee Price and Faye Hulsey; two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Gable was cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date and time.

Mr. Vines

Mr. Darrell Keith Vines, age 61 of Cedartown passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2017.

Mr. Vines was born March 12, 1956 in Polk County, son of Norma Jean Miller Koone and the late W. C. Vines.

He was a veteran of the United States Army having attained the rank of sergeant and retired as a sergeant from the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department.

Mr. Vines was of the Christian faith, loved to spend time at his shooting range and enjoyed being with his friends and grandbabies.

Survivors included two daughters and sons-in-law, April and Scottie Cornwell of Ranger and Hope and Corey Payne of Calhoun; mother, Norma Jean Koone of Cedartown; sister, Kimberly Ballard of Cedartown; and four grandchildren, Isaiah Cornwell, Elijah Cornwell, Jordan Payne and Emily Payne.

Funeral services for Mr. Vines were held on Sunday, Sept. 3, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Freeman Harris Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Vines officiating.

A eulogy was given by Mr. Jim Appel. Interment services were held on Monday, Sept. 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. in the Georgia National Cemetery of Canton.

The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jimmy Trammel, Matthew Waddell, Brad Vines, Arnold Vines, Mitch Sharp and Rodney Terry. Honorary pallbearers were: James Trammel, Greg Dobbins, J. D. Lyon, Donnie McBee and Braxton Waddell.

Mrs. Kovach

Mrs. Sandy Joan Kovach, 61, of the Black’s Bluff Road, Rome, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 29, 2017, in a Rome hospital.

Mrs. Kovach was born in the state of Indiana on Aug. 29, 1956, daughter of the late Bernie and Shirley Elting.

She was associated with Universal Tax Systems as a computer and tax consultant.

Mrs. Kovach is survived by her husband, Michael Kovach, and two step-daughters, Mrs. Amy Thacker of Rome, and Mrs. Amanda Money of Alabama. Five step-grandchildren also survive.

Memorial services for Mrs. Kovach were held on Friday afternoon, Sept. 1, 2017, at 1 p.m. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel with Dr. Robin Lindsey officiating.

The family received friends prior to the service hour.

Mrs. Bishop

Mrs. Carol Loveless Bishop, age 79, of Cave Spring, and formerly of Fairfield, Ohio passed away Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017.

Mrs. Bishop was born in Chicago, Ill., April 11, 1938 to the late Rev. Keith and Alice Loveless.

Her family had move to Cedartown many years ago to operate Murphy - Harpst Home.

She was raised in Methodist churches throughout this area. While living in Fairfield, Ohio she was a dedicated member of The Vineyard Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother Ralph Loveless. Mrs. Bishop is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Sprayberry of Rome; son and daughter in law, Greg and Kristi Bishop of Cedartown; grandchildren, Amanda Atkins, Charles Atkins, Kari Murphy and Keith Bishop; great grandchildren, Jade Harper, Ally Atkins, Lyric Murphy and Hendrix Murphy; brother Don Loveless; several nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

The memorial service for Mrs. Carol Bishop will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Tant

Mrs. Donna Marie Jones Tant, age 57 of Cedartown passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017.

She was born on Aug. 29, 1959 in Rome, the daughter of the late Wilford and Elizabeth Pierce Jones.

Mrs. Tant is survived by her fiancé, Kenneth Tudor; daughter and son in law, Jenny Barnette (Jamie); sons and daughter in law, Jonathan Wynn (Dawn) and Lee Owens; sisters, Sharon Brose (Randy) and Denise Jones; and grandchildren, Taylor Barnette, Langston Barnette, Jacob Johnson, Chelsea Johnson and Riley Johnson.

She is preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Judy Magruder and Gerry Tippins.

The funeral arrangements for Mrs. Donna Marie Jones Tant were conducted on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with the Rev. Dewey Atchley officiating.

Interment followed in the Northview Cemetery.

Mrs. Shaw

Mrs. Fay Sarah Patterson Shaw, age 79 of Cedartown, passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017.

She was born on Nov. 10, 1937 in Cedartown, the daughter of the late James Aggie and Jennie Brown Patterson.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by her daughter, Carol Shaw and sons, Tommy Shaw and Eddie Shaw.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Shaw and brothers, Don Patterson and Jim Patterson. A graveside service for Mrs. Fay Sarah Patterson Shaw was conducted on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Youngs Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. DeWayne New officiating.

Mr. Short

Mr. James Robert Short, age 37, of Rockmart, passed away suddenly on Saturday evening, Aug. 26, 2017. He was born on May 15, 1980 in Rome, the son of Wayne Short and Judy Baker Short.

Mr. Short had been employed by the City of Cedartown working in the Parks and Recreations department. He was a member of the Van Wert Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by Hubert and Amelia Jones, James Russell Short, Russell Short, Wanza Cooter and other family members.

Mr. Short is survived by his father, Wayne Short; his mother, Judy Baker Short; his son, Jacob Robert Short; his brother, Jerry Short; his sisters, Keren Miller and Taylor Atkins; his fiancé, Jessica Smith; step children, Jacob Smith and Anita Smith; beloved aunts, Mary Jane Legg and Marion Cooter Grant and uncle, Tommy Baker. A number of cousins also survive.

The Memorial Service for James Robert Short was held on Wednesday evening, Aug. 30, 2017 at 6 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with Rev. Kendell Davis officiating.

Ms. Carter

Ms. Rhonda Suzanne Thornton Carter, age 53, of Cedartown, formerly of Buchanan, passed away Friday, Aug. 25, 2017.

Ms. Carter was born in Bremen, Georgia, on Nov. 19, 1963.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Whitney and Harry White of Bremen; parents, Boyce and Johnnie Sue Jackson Thornton of Buchanan; one sister, Julie Finleyson of Carrollton; nephews, Taylor Finleyson and Zack Finelyson; aunts and uncles, Verla Thornton, Brenda and Jimmy Waters, Joan Sanders, and Carol and Bobby Thornton; and a number of other relatives.

Memorial services will be conducted Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017 at 3 p.m. from Hutcheson’s Memorial Chapel with Rev. Bill Brown officiating.

Music will be rendered by Bill and Carol Brown.

Mrs. Harris

Mrs. Beth Ann Marie Bishop Harris, age 39, of Hiram, and formerly of Aragon passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017.

Beth was born in Lawrenceville, on Aug. 2, 1978 a daughter of Paul and Marilyn Bishop. She had been a resident of Aragon since 1982 before moving to the Hiram, area where she was employed by Krystal.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Brandon Harris Sr., of Hiram; three children: Ariel Rose Bishop, Haley Hope Harris and Charles Brandon Harris Jr. all of Aragon; mother and step father: Marilyn and Marshall Whitley, Aragon; sister, Cynthia Juanita Westbrook, Aragon and five brothers: William Terry Owens, Villa Rica, Jerry Keith Owens, Aragon, Timothy Lamar Owens, Rockmart, Matthew Wayne Owens, Rome and Joseph Alvin Owens, Rome.

Mrs. Woodard

Mrs. Michele Woodard, age 46, of Attalla, Ala., and formerly of Polk County, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017.

She was born in Topeka, Kansas, on March 9, 1971, a daughter of the late Bud Seymour and the late Jacqueline Seymour.

Mrs. Woodard lived the greater part of her life in Polk County where she was a homemaker.

She was of the Baptist faith and loved writing poems. Survivors include her two children: Seth Seymour and Kiersten Griffin; and one grandson, Hunter, all of Cedartown.

In keeping with her wishes, Mrs. Woodard was cremated and memorial graveside services was held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jeff Hulsey officiating.

Mr. Broome

Mr. Charles E. Broome, age 71 of Cedartown, passed away on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017.

He was born on May 26, 1946 in Cedartown, the son of the late Charles Harry and Catherine Morgan Broome.

Mr. Broome is survived by his daughter, Heidi Andrews (James); son, Chuck Broome; sister, Joan Broome Rampley; and 8 grandchildren, Dustin Martin, Taylor Martin, Houston Welchel, Tyler Andrews, Colin Andrews, Greyson Andrews, Emma Perry, and Chaz Broome.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services for Mr. Charles E. Broome were conducted on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017 at 3 p.m. from the chapel Olin L. Gammage and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Joel A. Smith officiating.

Interment followed at Polk Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Herin

Mrs. Geraldine M. “Jerry” Herin, age 82 of Silver Creek passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017.

Mrs. Herin was one of nine siblings born Aug. 22, 1935 in Rockmart, daughter of the late Joseph Ballard and the late Daisy Morgan Ballard.

She was of the Baptist faith and for over 15 years was manager of the Oak Grove Water Department of Oak Grove, Kentucky.

Mrs. Herin loved country and western music and was preceded in death by her first husband, Coy Leon Moates in 1972.

Survivors include her husband, John C. Herin of Silver Creek to whom she was married May 31, 1975; sister, Patricia Lee of Silver Creek; brother, Earl Ballard of South San Gabriel, Calif.; niece, Marsha McBryde of Cedartown; and great-niece, Dana Hampton of Bremen; and special caregiver, Cindy “Elizabeth” Johnson of Rockmart.

Mr. Hooper

Mr. Charles Hooper, age 75, of Cedartown, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, Sept. 2, 2017 with his family at his side.

Mr. Hooper was born on Sept. 6, 1941 in Polk County the son of William Cleve Hooper and Evie Belle Johnson Hooper.

Mr. Hooper had been employed by Jockey International for many years and he retired following twenty nine dedicated years.

Later, he went to work for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Rockmart and retired following ten years of service.

He was a member of the Caledonia Lodge No. 121 F&AM and prior to declining health Mr. Hooper had been a very active member of the Lees Chapel Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon for many years.

Prior to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Patricia Johnson Hooper in 1996.

Mr. Hooper is survived by his wife, Carolyn Walker Hooper, his sons and daughters in law, Todd and Dianne Hooper and Gene and Sherrie Hooper; his brother, David Hooper; his sisters, Ruby Nell Camp, Ellen Dempsey and Artie Belle McFall and his grandchildren, Blair and Adam Elrod, Connor and Hannah Hooper and Lauren Hooper. A number of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Charles V. “Charlie” Hooper was conducted on Monday afternoon, Sept. 4, 2017 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home.

Interment followed in the family lot of the Northview Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by the West Georgia Masonic Club officiating at graveside. The family received friends on Sunday evening, Sept. 3, 2017 at the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home.
