Mrs. Garrett

Mrs. Ruth Garrett, age 92, of Rockmart, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 in the local nursing center.

She was born in Rome on Aug. 22, 1924, a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Popham.

Mrs. Garrett lived in Taylorsville during her early life but had lived in Rockmart the greater part of her life.

She was a member of the Rockmart Church of Christ. Mrs. Garrett worked for the Goodyear Mill for 37 years and following her retirement from the mill she worked for the Polk School District in Food Service at the Elm Street Middle School for thirteen years.

She enjoyed cooking and making visits to Helen, Georgia with friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert and William and two sisters Mary Frances and Lucille.

She is survived by three children: Harold Garrett (Karen), Rockmart, Michael Garrett (Ann), Aragon and Lisa Owens (Gwendell), Aragon; five grandchildren: Griffin, Emily, Brad, Ryan and Katie; four great grandchildren: Gracie, Walker, Emma Leigh and Bailey; two step grandchildren: Bryan and Joy and three step great grandchildren: Bella Kate, Wren and Emerson Rose.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home with Minister Josh Clevenger officiating. Interment will follow in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included: Harold Garrett, Michael Garrett, Gwendell Owens, Ryan Dover, Griffin Garrett and Brad Garrett.

Mrs. Bailey

Mrs. Evelyn L. Patterson Bailey, age 85, of Cedartown, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017.

She was born on April 9, 1932 in Cedartown, the daughter of the late Charlie and Jettie Channell Patterson.

Mrs. Bailey was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bailey is survived by her sister, Betty Ruth Cosby; brother, Coye Patterson; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Suzzie Terry.

Mrs. Bailey is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gordon Bailey; sisters, Syble Pitts and Jewel Wilson and brother, Jerry Patterson.

The funeral arrangements for Mrs. Evelyn L. Patterson Bailey were conducted on Monday, April 17, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Partain officiating.

Interment followed in the Polk Memory Garden Cemetery with Mr. Alex Wilson officiating.

The family of Mrs. Bailey received family and friends on Monday, April 17, 2017 prior to the funeral hour at the Gammage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Simpkins

Mrs. Hellen Louise Locklear Simpkins, age 80 of Acworth, Georgia formerly of Aragon, passed away Wednesday morning, April 12, 2017.

Mrs. Simpkins was born Aug. 3, 1936 in Aragon, daughter of the late Clyde Daniel Locklear and the late Kathleen Beck Locklear.

She was a graduate of the Rockmart High School Class of 1955 and a member of the Piedmont Ave. Baptist Church.

Mrs. Simpkins was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and loved going to Florida to walk on the beach to find seashells. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. “Bob” Simpkins on Sept. 9, 1998.

Survivors included a daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Danny Carducci of Acworth; son and daughter-in-law, Bryan and Jane Simpkins of Aragon; sister and brother-in-law, Vivian and Bobby Williamson of Rockmart; two grandchildren, Robert Benjamin Simpkins and Isabella Grace Carducci also survived.

Funeral graveside and interment services for Mrs. Simpkins were held on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 12 p.m. in the family lot of the Aragon Cemetery with Rev. Jay Rice officiating.

Mrs. Thompson

Mrs. Molly Jean Newton Thompson, age 81, of Cedartown, passed away on Wednesday morning, April 12, 2017.

Mrs. Thompson was born on Oct. 9, 1935 in Cherokee County, Ala., a daughter of Mr. John Forrest Newton and Mrs. Ima Ray Parker Newton. Mrs. Thompson had been employed by the Arrow Shirt Company where she retired following many dedicated years. She attended the Mountain Home Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years Rev. Ernest Van Thompson, father, John Forrest Newton; her mother, Ima Ray Parker Newton; a brother, Hayden Newton and her sister, Virginia McArthur.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her son, Keith Thompson; her son and daughter in law, Stanley and Mimi Thompson; her brother and sister in law, Henry and Jane Newton and her grandsons, Josh Thompson and Justin Thompson. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

The Funeral Service for Mrs. Molly Newton Thompson were conducted on Friday afternoon, April 14, 2017 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of the Lester C. Litesey Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Rice, Rev. Sammy Stephens and Rev. Anthony Trawick officiating. Interment will follow in the North View Cemetery.

Mr. Forrister

Mr. James C. Forrister, age 86, of Cedartown, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in his hometown.

He was born in Cleburne County, Ala., on Feb. 17, 1931 a son of the late Arthur Forrister and Emily Puckett Forrister.

Mr. Forrister had been a resident of Cedartown since 1951 and was a member of the Rockmart Church of Christ. He was a contractor for over thirty years in Polk County having an ownership in Forrister and Forrister Contracting and also in Polk Development Company.

His hobbies included hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James Keith Forrister on Sept. 18, 2001; by two brothers: Curtis and Dewey Forrister and by several half brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Geneva Witt Forrister; son, Kyle Forrister and wife Lorie; three grandchildren: Anna Forrister, Jennifer Forrister and Jamie Forrister; one great grandson, Payton Bell; two half brothers: Frank and Howard; five half sisters: Judy, Rachel, Linda, Missy and Teresa.

Graveside funeral and interment services were held Saturday, April 15, 2107 at 2:30 p.m. in Polk Memory Gardens with Ministers Doug Simms and Josh Clevenger officiating.

Pallbearers included: Payton Bell, Frank Forrister, Howard Forrister, Jim McClure, Chris McClure and Scott Forrister.

Mr. Brand

Mr. Herschel Ray Brand, age 67, of Cedartown, passed away on Tuesday evening, April 11, 2017.

Mr. Brand was born on March 8, 1950 in Haralson County, a son of the late Mr. Herschel Brand and the late Mrs. Lottie Garrett Brand.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Herman “Bugzz” Brand; sisters, Jean Summerville, Marjory Brand and Betty Waddell and a daughter, Sandra Faye Rittenhouse.

He was a member of the Lake View Baptist Church.

Mr. Brand is survived by his sons Jason Brand and Edward Ray Brand; his daughters, Tammy Brand and Paula Matthews; brothers, Johnny Brand and Delane Brand; sisters, Linda Duke and Eva Waddell. Ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Brands wishes were to be cremated. No formal services are planned at this time.

Mr. Anderson

Mr. Joseph Norton Anderson, age 76 of Cedartown, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

He was born on June 9, 1940, in Macon, the son of the late Kankakee and Betty Norton Anderson.

Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Janice Randall Anderson; daughters, Jill Dempsey (Brad) and Julie Worley (Bob); son, Jon Anderson (Deanna); grandchildren, Ashley McGriff, Taylor McGriff, Grant Dempsey, Caroline Worley, Wesley Worley, Maggie Anderson, and Hilton Anderson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Virginia A. Crider and brother, Robert Anderson.

Mr. Anderson was a native of Aragon, and graduated from Rockmart High School in 1958. While at RHS, he was an All-State football and basketball athlete.

Upon graduation from UGA in 1962, Mr. Anderson was commissioned as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. After his military service, he entered University of Georgia Law School.

He came to Cedartown and joined Wayne Gammon in his Law Practice in 1970.

His greatest love was serving his community. As a member of First Baptist Church, he served as a deacon and in multiple leadership positions. He deeply believed in the importance of Sunday School and was known to invite anyone in his path to join him at First Baptist Church.

Mr. Anderson participated in several home and foreign mission trips. One of his biggest passions was the Silver Comet trail, where he was a Trail Ranger.

In 2011 he was named Polk County Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year”.

In keeping with Mr. Anderson’s wishes he was cremated. A private inurnment service will be held by the family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Mr. Anderson would have hoped that those who loved him will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness in memory of him.

Mr. Cheatwood

Mr. John Franklin Cheatwood, age 83 of Cedartown, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

He was born on Feb. 15, 1934 in Cedartown, the son of the late Ralph and Jenny McKibben Cheatwood.

Mr. Cheatwood is survived by his son, Don R. Cheatwood; brother, Marvin Cheatwood; grandson, Craig Cheatwood (Betsy); great-granddaughter, Nova Rayne Cheatwood and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cheatwood is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elma Jo Ingram Cheatwood; sister, Louise Wood and brother, Ralph Cheatwood, Jr.

The funeral arrangements for Mr. John Franklin Cheatwood were conducted on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating.

Interment followed in the Polk Memory Gardens Cemetery with Full Military Rites conducted by the Brewster-Cleveland American Legion Post #86 Honor Guard.

Ms. Gunn

Ms. Shawna Reed Gunn, age 46, of Cave Spring, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Ms. Gunn was born in Rome, Feb. 11, 1971, the daughter of Gary and Luan Taylor Reed.

Ms. Gunn attended Cave Spring School, and was a graduate of Coosa High School. Prior to becoming disabled, she was associated with AT&T and Bell-South.

Ms. Gunn is survived by her two sons that were the love of her life, Hunter Gunn of Cave Spring and Hayes Gunn of Piedmont, Ala. Her parents, Gary and Luan Reed and her brother, Kevin Reed all of Cave Spring also survive.

Memorial services for Ms. Gunn were held Monday evening, April 17, 2017 at 7 p.m. at John House’s Cave Spring Chapel with Rev. Dale Byars officiating.

Mrs. Conwell

Mrs. Betty Jo Spann Conwell, age 85 of Cedartown, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

She was born on May 14, 1931, the daughter of the late Charlie and Pearl Spann.

Mrs. Conwell is survived by her step-son, Donald Eugene Conwell Jr.; son-in-law, Darrell Puckett; grandchildren, Cory and Kerry Puckett, Charlie and Candice Puckett and great-grandchildren, Harper Puckett and Bailee Renfroe.

Mrs. Conwell is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Eugene Conwell Sr.; daughter, Cathy Elaine Conwell Puckett and several brothers.

The funeral arrangements for Mrs. Betty Jo Spann Conwell were conducted on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the Gammage Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Benefield officiating.

Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Vines

Mrs. Lizzie Mae Hulsey Vines, age 85, of Buchanan passed away Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Mrs. Vines was born in Haralson County on Feb. 27, 1932, the daughter of the late Lumus Hulsey and the late Ida Mae Folsom Hulsey.

Mrs. Vines retired from West Haralson School where she worked in the lunch room.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Vines, Sr.; one sister, Maurine Hulsey; five brothers and their spouses, Wilburn and Kate Hulsey, Calvin and Flora Lee Hulsey, Hugh Dorsey and Joyce Hulsey, Winford Hulsey, and Leroy Hulsey.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John H. and Opal Vines of Buchanan; one brother and sister-in-law, Alton and Mary Lee Hulsey of Cedartown; three sisters-in-law, Clara Hulsey of Tucker, Jeanette Callahan of Buchanan and Faye Crawford of Cedartown; two grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Tracey Vines, and Lisa and Jason Hudgens; four great grandchildren, Laurel Vines, Lanie Vines, Alyssa Hudgens and Addison Hudgens; special friends, Donny and Nell Anderson; and a number of other relatives.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at 3 p.m. from New Canaan Baptist Church with Rev. Jason Hudgens and Rev. Billy Vines officiating. Music was rendered by Jamie Hutcheson, Kyle Cochran and Becky Bearden.

Interment followed in New Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Hutchins

Mr. Henry Hutchins, 87, of Cedartown, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Floyd Medical Center.

A service for Mr. Hutchins was Saturday, April 15,2017, at 12 p.m. New Bethel Baptist Church in Rockmart.

Interment followed the service at Polk Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Phillips

Mrs. Shirley E. Phillips, age 82 of Rockmart, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017.

Mrs. Phillips was born Nov. 14, 1934 in Rockmart, daughter of the late Charles Ellison and the late Mary Harper Ellison.

She was a graduate of Rockmart High School and a member of the Aragon United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Phillips retired from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company with over 40 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Phillips on Oct. 6, 2000; and a daughter, Belinda Philips.

Survivors included a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Dennis Caldwell of Rockmart; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Judy Ellison of Rome; three grandchildren, Trey, Travis and Kitzi; five great-grandchildren, Tristan, Lexi, Justin, Brooklyn and Hadlee also survived.

Funeral graveside and interment services for Mrs. Phillips were held on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the family lot of the Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. James Hannah officiating.

The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: E.J. Hall, Justin Caldwell, Tristan Hall, Kyle Ivester, Ryan Fields and Drew Waits. Honorary pallbearer will be Travis Caldwell.

Mr. Summerville

Mr. James Leon (Joe) Summerville, age 71, of Cedartown, passed away Friday, April 7, 2017 at his residence following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Buchanan on Jan. 5, 1946, a son of Chalmus Summerville and Frankie Weaver Summerville.

Mr. Summerville spent his childhood and early adult life in Haralson County, later making Polk County his home for the past 28 years. He had a love for coin collecting and restoring old vehicles.

He spent his working career at Goodyear Mill where he retired with over 30 years of service.

Mr. Summerville was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church and also attended the Victory Baptist Church over the last several years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chalmus Summerville; daughter, Sherry Dawn Summerville; son, Bryan Summerville; sister, Lucy Jean Carter; and brother, Curtis Summerville.

Survivors include his loving wife, Glenda Summerville, of Cedartown to whom he was married on March 24, 1989; daughter, Jamie Charlene Aaron and her husband Jeff, Canton;

Three grandchildren also survive: Dustin Allen Barber, Crystal LeeAnn Childers and Zachary Bryan Barber; one great granddaughter, Keely Barber; mother, Frankie Crawford, Rockmart; four brothers: Jimmy Summerville and his wife Sarah, Bremen, Doug Summerville and his wife Lynn, Rockmart, Wayne Summerville and his wife Vera, Cedartown and Cecil Summerville, Bremen; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 10, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Snapp and Rev. Eddie Davidson officiating.

Interment followed in the Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers included: Dustin Barber, Zachary Barber, Brad Summerville, Barry Summerville, Casey Childers and Brandon Sheriff.

Mr. Ballew

Mr. Richard Franklin (Ricky) Ballew, age 54, of Rockmart, passed away Friday, April 7, 2017.

Ricky was born in Rome, on Jan. 26, 1963 a son of Harriette Combs Ballew and the late Jerry L. Ballew Sr.

He had lived the greater part of his life in the Rockmart area where he worked as a carpenter. He loved to talk about God and spend time with his family.

Survivors include his three daughters: Candi Ballew, Rockmart, Heather Ballew, Cedartown and Christa Ballew, Cartersville; mother, Harriette Garner, Cumming; four brothers and sisters: Dale Ballew, Rockmart, Darlene Ballew, Duluth, Beth Gomez, Cumming and Billy Ballew, Calhoun; four grandsons; one great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Aragon Cemetery.

Active pallbearers included: Robert Combs, Johnny Combs, Brent Morris, Bennie Duncan, John Gomez and Gilbert Raines. Shyheim Channels and Jaysean Vanzant served as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Nichols

Mr. Terrell Vance (Terry) Nichols, age 73 of Cedartown, passed away on Friday, April 7, 2017, after an extended illness.

He was born on March 1, 1944 in Cedartown, the son of the late W. W. (Toby) and Mildred (Sis) Landrum Rowell.

Mr. Nichols was a graduate of the Cedartown High School Class of 1964. He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Cedartown.

Mr. Nichols served in the Army National Guard and is a 37-year retiree from Lockheed-Martin in Marietta.

He was a devoted husband for 40 years, beloved “Pop” to his children and grandchildren, coach to many, and a friend to all.

Mr. Nichols is survived by his wife, Shelby Goss Nichols, and sons and daughters-in law-, Pete and Karen Hutchings, Cody and Hanna Nichols, daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Britt Brumby, and daughter-in-law, Ashley Nichols; grandchildren Brooks Brumby, Hunter Hutchings, Marycille Brumby, Grancer Hutchings, Grayson Hutchings, Brooklyn Nichols, Coralee Brumby, Will Nichols, and baby Nichols due in 2017;

Sisters-in-law Brooke Goss Ferguson (David) and Carol Lynn Goss; an uncle, J.D. Nichols (Martha) many nieces and nephews, other relatives and dear friends also survive.

Mr. Nichols is preceded in death by his parents, twin brother and sister-in-law, Derrell Rance (Derry) and Jane Garrett Nichols; in-laws, Tom B. and Carolyn Brooks Goss, brother-in-law, Tom Bradley Goss, and many aunts and uncles.

The funeral arrangements for Mr. Nichols were conducted on Monday, April 10, 2017 at 5 p.m. at Second Baptist Church with Mr. Jason Rice and Mr. Elex Jarrell officiating.

Eulogies were delivered by Mr. Yancey Moore, Mrs. Brooke Ferguson, and Mr. Cody Nichols.

Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Blake Dodd and Mr. Jason Ward officiating.

Military rites were conducted by the American Legion Brewster Cleveland Post #86.

The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Shane Nichols, Joey Rice, Jason Stroup, Doug Racine, Drew Vann, Austin Vann, Olin Gammage, Bo Goss, Matt Patterson, and Terry Patterson.

Honorary pallbearers included Mr. Nichols’ grandchildren: Brooks Brumby, Hunter Hutchings, Marycille Brumby, Grancer Hutchings, Grayson Hutchings, Brooklyn Nichols, Coralee Brumby, Will Nichols, and Gus Robert Gammage, and the former members of Company B 1-108 Armor Georgia Army National Guard.

Mrs. Wolfe

Mrs. Tammy Chambers Wolfe, age 50, of Cedartown passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017.

She was born in Rome, on Nov. 12, 1966 a daughter of Seward Ott Chambers Jr. and Molly West Chambers.

Mrs. Wolfe had lived all of her life in Polk County and worked for Davis Core and Pad Company of Cave Spring for 14 years.

She enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles and spending time with all the kids in her family.

She is survived by two children: Jesse Wolfe (Kim), Cedartown and Katie Wolfe (Chandler), Cedartown; grandchildren: Hunter, Alexis and Kaiden; mother and father, Seward Ott Chambers Jr. and Molly West Chambers, Cedartown; three brothers: Kenneth Chambers and his wife, Shannon, Rockmart, Corey Chambers, Cedartown and Lance (Jay) Chambers and his wife Tonya, Cedartown; nieces: Ashley Chambers, Wendy Chambers, Ansley Chambers and Carrie Wolfenboger; nephews: Dusty Chambers, Austin Chambers and Chris Weisman.

Memorial services were held Friday, April 14, 2017 at 6 p.m in the chapel of the Alvis Miller and Son Funeral Home with Craig McDonald officiating and a eulogy given by Ashley Chambers.
