Road conditions and extreme temperatures will keep students home from school again in Polk County on Thursday, officials decided this afternoon.

Polk School District Superintendent Laurie Atkins made the announcement to parents, students and staff around 2:50 p.m. that schools will remain closed for Thursday,  January 18.

"With there being continuing hazardous road conditions, the forecast temperatures to remaining below freezing for an extended period of time, and the Governor declaring a State of Emergency through Thursday, the school district will be closed again for students and staff," Atkins' statement read.

She added that temperatures are predicted to rise again on Thursday, which is hoped to alleviate travel issues for local residents and get buses back on the road by Friday.

"We greatly appreciate everyone's understanding and patience," Atkins said. "All circumstances and safety issues are weighed before making a decision, and we realize it affects our parents and guardians when making arrangements for student care."

Students were out today in a Distance Learning Day, having taken materials home with them on Tuesday before an early release ahead of the arrival of the latest round of snow and ice in Polk County.
