A Cedartown woman is dead and firefighters spent several hours on Sunday night extinguishing a fire, according to a press release from the City of Cedartown.

Firefighters were called out at 9:45 p.m. to the fire that took the life of Shirley Anne Richards, 69, of 120 Herbert St. Richards' home was a total loss as a result of the fire. 

Deputy Polk County Coroner Ivan Warner said Richards' family was notified today of the fire and her death. 

The release stated the Cedartown Fire Department called in off-duty personnel and also got assistance from the Polk County Volunteer Fire Department, according to Cedartown Fire Chief Darrell Stephens. 

"We worked all night and into the morning hours to put the fire out," Stephens said.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation by the state fire marshal with assistance from the Cedartown Fire Department, the release stated.
