Come one and all to Rockmart’s Riverwalk Festival where the Rotary Club of Polk County will be hosting a 5k run, or walk if preferred, during this coming Saturday, Oct. 21 for the festival at Seaborne Jones Park, 180 W. Elm St. The event begins bright and early at 8 a.m.
Early registration for the 5k is $25; Event registration is $35. Those looking for the early bird discount can sign up at https://www.active.com/rockmart-ga/running/distance-running-races/rotary-riverwalk-5k-run-2017?int=. Event signups begin at 7:15 a.m. and will be held at 100 Church St., next to the park. The course for the run is in and out of the Silver Comet trail from the trailhead.
Money earned from the 5k will go towards benefiting The Rotary Club of Polk County’s local scholarship program which aids local students who are pursuing graduate, undergraduate, or secondary studies. The scholarships are open to everyone but Rotary members and their families. $7.5 million in scholarships are given out by Rotary each year, on average, and Rotary has given approximately 350,000 scholarships.
The Children’s Fun Run will be held soon after the 5k run for the community’s younger runners who want to compete.
The fun run is free of charge and will feature a lighter, but still interesting course.
Floyd Medical Center’s Live Well Program is providing corporate sponsorship for the run. Live Well is an initiative to help the men and women of Polk get active, eat better, and start healthy habits by supplying information and resources related to diet and exercise. By visiting http://www.polkhospital.org/LiveWell/Pages/default.aspx citizens can find checklists, facts, tips, answers to frequently asked questions, and much more.
The 5k run is one of many activities lined up during the Rockmart Riverwalk Festival. Alongside more than 30 vendors selling unique crafts and foods, there will be live music, pumpkin painting, and non-profit organizations like Rotary raising funds. The festival is 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. and is free for anyone and everyone to enjoy.
