Cold weather

The temperatures are cold enough for the opening days of the week that the City of Rockmart and a local non-profit have teamed up to ensure that local homeless have a place to stay warm overnight.

The Hogue Avenue gymnasium will be open to those who need a place to get out of the winter temperatures -- set to dip down to 29 overnight tonight -- starting at 6 p.m.

The cold weather shelter is being run by the city and the Rockmart Homeless Initiative.

Additionally, the organization asks local residents to be sure to check on their neighbors during the next few days until temperatures warm up, and to encourage anyone with heat, food or shelter to take advantage of the shelter overnight.

The opened the gym on Monday night as well.
